4 Steps to Take if You Suspect You're a Victim of Identity Theft
Every day there are reports of identity theft or fraud in the news. In fact, as I write this newsletter, there was just another report of Social Security numbers that could be found on the Internet.
If your information was compromised or stolen, would you know what to do? Here are 4 steps that could help you - some which you may not have heard before:
1. Contact the Fraud Department of one of the 3 major Credit Bureaus: Equifax, Experian or TransUnion.
Equifax: 800.525.6285 www.equifax.com P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241
Experian: 888.397.3742 www.experian.com P.O. Box 9532, Allen, TX 75013
TransUnion: 800.680.7289 www.transunion.com P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790
2. Close any accounts that have been tampered with or opened fraudulently,
3. File a police report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place.
4. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission using the FTC's Identity Theft Hotline at 877.438.4338 or online at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or by mail at: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission - 600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington DC 20580
Quick Tip - Utility Statements
Most people assume they must keep their utility statements for 7 years - the number of years recommended to keep your tax returns. Do you know how much paper that adds up to?
Utility statements such as those for your: Water, Sewer, Electric, Gas, Cable TV, Direct TV, Phone, Cell Phone, DSL, etc... can all be eliminated after the bill is paid, unless of course there is a way that you can deduct any of these on a tax return and therefore you would need to save as supporting documentation for your tax return.
I am asked often: "Do I need to shred these documents?" These documents do not contain information such as your social security number - so unless you want to protect your Name and Address (which is public information), then you do not need to shred them. It really is a matter of your personal comfort level.
