Eliminate Chaos, LLC Sponsors Messy Garage Contest

Seattle - Laura Leist, President of Eliminate Chaos, LLC and Mike Seal owner of Garage Tek NW teamed up to sponsor a Messy Garage Contest.

Evening Magazine, Seattle's highest-rated locally-produced show in the country will air the transformation on May 19th, 2004 on Channel 5 at 7pm. The Contest - sponsored by Eliminate Chaos and Garage Tek is a prize valued at over $11,000.

Leist, an Organizing Expert, stated "The garage often becomes a dumping ground for things not needed or wanted. It is so easy to open the door and toss something in and then forget about it since it is not part of the living space." Leist cited a study completed in April 2003 by Harris Interactive that showed that out of 1011 individuals questioned, 38% indicated that the garage was the messiest room in their home. Leist will be the first one to tell you that because "the garage is the last room of the house you see as you leave for the day, and the first room you see when you return home it is in your subconscious daily as a large source of clutter, frustration and overwhelm." She is also quick to point out that "the garage door is typically the one door to the house that people leave open for the rest of the world to see and that it is not necessarily a true representation of what is inside the home - yet that is the first impression you give someone driving by or your neighbors on a daily basis."

Sharon and David Cumberbatch who have lived in their home for 5 years are the winners of the contest. Sharon was embarrassed to leave her garage door open for her neighbors in their cul-de-sac to see. Today, after the transformation, Sharon said "I feel like I can breath better, and I’m proud to leave the garage door open." Sharon and David are no different than many couples who marry, combine two homes, and have a couple of children in a short amount of time. The garage became their dumping ground for furniture cleared out to make room for children, along with toys, old work files, books, memorabilia and too many empty boxes that just needed to be recycled.

The transformation was no small project - it took nearly 125 person hours to complete over a five-day period. This time was a combined effort of 20 hours of work by the homeowners to sort through their things; over 60 hours of time donated by the Organizing Consultants at Eliminate Chaos and over 40 hours by the experts at Garage Tek to prep, paint and panel the walls.

Through this process and transformation, Sharon learned valuable organizing skills that she can now apply to other areas of her home. Sharon stated "I learned a lot from you and the techniques you taught me and yes, you're darn right I plan on tackling our office very soon."
